Pairforming

The Swiss film maker Alain Tanner once said that there are two starting points to a story: a film discourse and a film-poem. Pairforming, a performance-poem? It is more a collection of videos, dances on the background, photographs, drawings and texts, then a performance. They are the result of a study inspired by the piano piece by John Cage Cheap Imitation from 1969. A track which is in turn inspired by Socrate, a symphonic drama composed by Erik Satie in 1917 based on three texts by Plato.

The painting, Portret van Vincent D., 2004-2009, by Lucas Devriendt, was the inspiration for Performance of A Portrait. In it the painter and his model, the dancer Vincent Dunoyer, looked back on their collaboration. The painting and the performance have now resulted in Pairforming, a collection of videos, dances, photos and drawings. All these components enter into a dialogue with one another, with the audience and with the space in which they are presented.
